Claire (Brandi Botkin) has cancer at an advanced stage, and her husband Matt (Patrick Taft) can’t bear the thought of losing her. Matt conducts a ritual that involves blood and a large bag with something in it that should not be looked at, touched, or spoken to once the ritual is complete. This leads to a story that is part supernatural horror and part heartfelt drama about a husband and wife who no longer understand where each other is coming from. It’s, without a doubt, one of the scariest and best-haunted houses of all the LA Halloween attractions.
The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist
Shirley Jackson’s novel was adapted again in 1999 as a lame Scooby-Doo rip-off starring Lian Neeson and Owen Wilson, but it got a Netflix reboot this year courtesy of Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Before I Wake, Gerald’s Game). Proving that the haunted house premise can work over 10 hours instead of just two, Flanagan’s smart, stylish, downright frightening take on the genre feels like a bit of a milestone. With enough space and time to burrow into Jackson’s classic novel (and for it to burrow into us), the series is a triumph of style and substance – atmosphere over cheap thrills. – The Uninvited sees a brother and sister moving from London to Cornwall to take advantage of a gorgeous abandoned house they’ve found on the clifftops. Considering how long it’s been empty, the house is immaculate… except for one upstairs room, which is always cold, and somehow ugly, and, well, yeah, obviously it’s haunted.

Regardless, there’s more good than less-good in Late Night with the Devil, making it an enthralling and imaginative crowd-pleaser. Blackout is a modernized tribute to classic monster movies, specifically Lon Chaney Jr.’s Wolf Man, but it’s not a remake of any of those Universal films. Darkness was directed by Jaume Balagueró of REC and Sleep Tight fame, which should be a pretty good indication that it’s not the slick early-2000s Hollywood nonsense the box art makes it look like. Nope, this is a nasty little film with a creepy atmosphere and a killer twist – though there seem to be two different cuts of it around, and the one that takes out all the swearing and violence is a bit rubbish. The harsher one, though, will make you consider investing in a nightlight. Creepy from the outset, what’s great about The Skeleton Key is the way its heroine is slowly seduced into believing in the supernatural. The ghosts here are particularly nasty ones (though in fairness, they were given good cause, initially), and it’s got one hell of a sting at the end.
The mockumentary was aired on Halloween night, so viewers were already in the mood to have their pants scared off. The matriarch, Annie Graham (played by the inimitable Toni Collette), learns to perform seances to communicate with the departed, which opens the door to a terrifying haunting. Housebound almost lulls you into a false sense of security with some of its more ridiculous moments. The film’s less humorous flashes will unsettle you deeply no matter what. Its design is to distract you with tension and visual jolts while forcing you to accept its deranged story. This sounds like an elaborate way to approach Ghostwatch, but I promise it’s worth it. A young model (Christina Raines) breaks up with her boyfriend, moves to a new place, and finds out she has a fast track on the portal to Hell. The Catholic Church has a strong presence there — it’s a good situation for everyone.

The volunteers don’t know what the drug does, but they all submit to the trial for various reasons (mostly for the money they’ll receive). The effects of the drug turn deadly when the volunteers realize they will die if they fall asleep. Double Blind doesn’t take too many big risks with its storytelling, it just does everything exceedingly well.
This is a big 70s Hollywood production with a big cast playing it seriously against a ludicrous storyline. Hausu is less of a movie, and more of an experience that everyone should have at least once. It still works today because that sense of fun is part of the film’s actual DNA. However, the characters are not really as important as the movie itself. Director William Castle had a long career in directing low-budget charmers with wonderful gimmicks. House on Haunted Hill benefited from that, as well as Price playing the droll smarminess to the glorious nines.
